Album Review: Party Dozen- 21 Bum Salute

Party Dozen are back with equal amounts sleaze and humour. The title is of course a ridiculous pun, but the music absolutely bites. Take ‘Euro Stomper’. It’s as if Suicide went glam rock. Like salted caramel ice cream, these disparate ingredients shouldn’t work, but do. ‘Captain Hook’ is a low-end psychedelic banger and ‘Toss My Coin’ descends into skronky chaos. They point to the influence of bands like The Stooges on ‘Special Unit’ too.

Essentially, it’s as though Kirsty Tickle and Jonathan Boulet recorded these tracks in a bunker. Tickle’s drawled vocals are buried in reverb, but her saxophone is front and centre at all times. If we were to finally reach the end of days, pass me my tinfoil hat and supplies. Party Dozen would be the dystopian soundtrack of choice.

Nick Cave previously collaborated with them. If he ever tired of his “elder statesman of rock” status, he could do a lot worse than join them in said bunker. It’s fun, frenetic music for troubled times.
