For Bel

We lost beautiful Beldina Odenyo Onassis five years ago today. Anyone involved in the theatre and music scene in Scotland knew this lovely and gifted person. I will never forget the first time I met her at the Hug and Pint bar in Glasgow. We ended up chatting and giggling away. She had a wicked sense of humour as well as incredible kindness.

Sometimes, we’d sit up messaging each other silly jokes at all hours. But I didn’t realise how ill she was. Her last message haunts me still. She still leaves a hole inside me. I think of her often. She was an amazing artist, and incredible soul.

This clip is the last time she performed live at the Scottish Album of the Year awards, performing a gorgeous cover of Kathryn Joseph’s ‘The Bird’. A film called ‘Bel’, about her too- short life and career, directed by Louise Lockwood, is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
