Album Reviews: Otoboke Beaver- Live At Taku Taku/Live At Fandango

What’s better than one live Otoboke Beaver album? Two live ones. The Japanese “knock out or pound cake” band are one of the world’s most exciting live acts, with fans like Dave Grohl and Jack White, and now their massive whirlwind of sound has been captured in show form. And they’re both, unsurprisingly, excellent in their own right.

Live At Taku Taku

Where to start? ‘Bakuro Book’ is pure punk, but far more complex rhythmically. Kahokiss is an incredible drummer, bringing effortless wild tempo changes and fills. The brilliantly named ‘I Checked Your Cellphone’ sounds like an uncaged beast, ready to attack. Accorinrin”s sarcasm is almost feral on ‘Pardon’ , but coupled with brilliant harmonies. And ‘Don’t Light My Fire’ prompts a big audience chantalong, until it completely explodes.

Live At Fandango

Meanwhile, the sister album, recorded at Fandango, also captures the wild spirit of the band. Fan favourites like ‘Love Is Short’ and ‘Leave Me Alone! No Stay With Me!’ sound possessed. My personal favourite is a powerful ‘ I Won’t Dish Out Salad’. It’s a pyrotechnic collection. In a world full of safe Waitrose indie, the Kyoto gals are the real deal. Long may they rock.

PS: Sending love and best wishes from Hit The North to drummer Kahokiss on her maternity leave.
