Belgian singer-songwriter Camille Willemart has an effortlessly beautiful voice, perfect for emulating chanson -era material, a la Francois Hardy. But it’s what she does with her arrangements that so intrigue. They feel eerie and detached, even as they are quiet and lovely. There’s a sense of the calm before the storm to Camille Camille.
‘J’ai Reve’ and ‘In A Song’ have that intimate, somewhat disarming delicacy, while ‘The Humming Song’ is just that: only Willemart humming the main melody and harmony parts, yet never blending them together. The whole is often reminiscent of Nick Drake and Kristin Hersh melodies at their most melancholic, which is all to the good.
