Overlooked Classic : Ben Golomstock- Stories From the Moon

The late composer, DJ and musician Ben Golomstock created an album with some of his friends, and it’s glorious: a melee of Miranda Sex Garden style enchanted rock and the more classical, cinematic side.

Having joined Miranda Sex Garden early doors, this album Golomstock co-wrote with his collaboraters can’t help but lean into the gothic drama they crafted in the nineties. Indeed, Miranda/ Mediaeval Baebes singer Katharine Blake is here, alongside her beau, the much missed Nick Marsh, ex- Flesh For Lulu. Katie Jane Garside from Daisy Chainsaw, Queenadreena and Ruby Throat also lends her unhinged beauty.

So of course , there are tracks like ‘Silencio’, a long-lost giallo soundtrack piece, with a babbling incantation from a witchy choir stirred into the pot (cauldron?). Then ‘Ghost House’ brings filthy murmured poetry to a whirling waltz. The cover of ‘In Heaven’ from Eraserhead isn’t as demented as Miranda’s,but eerie enough. And ‘Wolf Saxon’ is a sleazy, staggering slice of jazz that could fit into a Lynchian room, full of dark happenings and ominous symbolism. But there are moments of musical box delicacy too, as with ‘The Haunted Palace’.

It’s sacred and profane, a wonderful record. Golomstock sadly passed away in 2018, but what a beautiful legacy he left.
