This debut is a glorious thing indeed, bringing some much needed sunshine as days get colder. The duo, both based in Manchester, recorded the album in Greenwich, and it’s both melodic and full of improvised energy.
Sleepy, feline cellos mesh with tape loops and it’s Holland -Fricke’s unique approach to cello playing that feels so innovative – she often plays in a percussive way, as evinced by the title track.
There’s music for every mood and dream state here. ‘At First’ is infused with drones and warped sounds, but sweetened with the duo’s airy vocals.’Slow Thing’ in contrast feels hazy and warped, suffering from a little sunstroke. But ‘Hazy Blue’ takes a more contemplative route, more elegiac in tone.
As genres blur, now more than ever before in contemporary music, it’s wonderful hearing new artists willing to push boundaries even further. This is a gorgeous, fully-formed debut by any standard.
