I considered this for “Overlooked Classics”, but then thought better of it. It’s not perfect – the title track isn’t great – but holy shit, otherwise… what a debut from the Norwegian quartet who Dstudied jazz composition at music school. It’s fierce, quirky and beautiful.
Like a mash -up of Lykke Li and Battles, the math rock, prog rock, indie, punk, you name it influences cut through strong melodies and masterful, blistering playing. Deerhoof are another band they’re also often compared to, which can only be a great thing.
I’ve been lucky enough to see them play live twice so far, and they’re a joy. Ragnhild Jamtveit is irrepressible, full of Tiggerish bounce , singing like a wired to the moon angel. Birthday captures this, with the caffeinated zip of My Blood, sweet but pissed -off Honey and closer, the chamber pop homage Peachy.
Rarely can a band capture their live essence on an album, but this comes close. Ah, 2019, such innocent days. The world had no idea what lay ahead…
