Cat Lovers
In a predominantly dog lovers’ town, I’m a cat person. I glance sideways, but there are few moggy types there, and I’m sitting alone with a group of people who are immune to magical feline charms. I seem to forever be the sore thumb here. Bowie and The Cure sang about them; Angela Carter wroteContinue reading “Cat Lovers”
*Film Review : Melania
This radical, wholly impartial new documentary from Brett Ratner and Amazon follows the thrilling upward trajectory of one Melania Knauss Trump, as she finally finds her feet on the global stage. Melania is now her own unique brand. She’s right up there with Beyonce, Madonna, Oprah and … yes, possibly, even God. Melania is everyContinue reading “*Film Review : Melania”
Catherine O’ Hara Has Gone
The versatile actor with the lovely voice has passed away at 71 and it’s such a big loss. To a whole generation she’ll forever be Kevin’s mom Kate McCallister in ‘Home Alone’, to another, Moira Rose in ‘Schitt’s Creek’, to older comedy fans she started out on Canadian TV as a sketch comedian, but forContinue reading “Catherine O’ Hara Has Gone”
No Burns Night Here
Robert Burns is supposedly our National Bard, held in great esteem all over Scotland, but I’m having none of it. Bad enough that much of his work is doggerel (although Tam O’ Shanter is decent enough storytelling in its own way) but also, the man was allegedly a prick who raped his pregnant wife JeanContinue reading “No Burns Night Here”
Album Review: James Adrian Brown -Forever Neon Lights
Former Pulled Apart By Horses guitarist James Adrian Brown’s debut album is an eerie but slick series of beats, sitting somewhere between Boards Of Canada and Gold Panda. His choppy electronics are heavy but beautiful, warped yet melodic. These paradoxes make his sound interesting. Contradictions in sonics are always welcome with me. He may notContinue reading “Album Review: James Adrian Brown -Forever Neon Lights”
Album Review: Scattered Purgatory- Post Purgatory
Taiwan experimental band Scattered Purgatory, the duo of Lu Li-Yang and Lu Jiachi, gleefully put genres through the mincing machine, cackling as they go. This new album, forthcoming on the excellent Guruguru Brain label, is full of glorious surprises. Essentially, they make giallo rock, deep, dark rock with saxophone cutting through drone and clattering percussion.Continue reading “Album Review: Scattered Purgatory- Post Purgatory”
Uncertain Choreography
Tentatively, I dim the cheerful banality of morning radio, dialling down the forced fun and drinking industrial strength coffee, trying to shake myself awake. It feels like new terrain, despite the fact that I grew up here. It’s both origin story and Version 2.0 : director’s cut. I’m the main character in a remake fewContinue reading “Uncertain Choreography”
Overlooked Classics: Drugstore Cowboy (1989)
Years before ‘Trainspotting’ cemented its place in literature and film history, auteur Gus Van Sant, along with screenwriter Daniel Yost, created a brilliant film about a bunch of junkies and the rigmarole of fixing. Here, the setting is Portland and the decade, the early seventies. Matt Dillon is the lead character, Bob, putting his broodingContinue reading “Overlooked Classics: Drugstore Cowboy (1989)”
Legacy Acts
At the end of last year , I was unfortunate enough to hear the most recent single from David Byrne, ‘T Shirt’. It’s made of thin material indeed, and I say that as someone who likes some Talking Heads work and his projects with Eno and St Vincent. Likewise Kylie and her insipid Christmas single,Continue reading “Legacy Acts”
