Should’ve Been A Hit: Pop Will Eat Itself-Can U Dig It?

P…WE…I! Back in the day, West Midlands scamps Pop Will Eat Itself were a scrappy grebo band. Grebo was a term for scruffy, rough around the edges indie bands and was ubiquitous for about ten minutes in the mid -eighties. It obviously didn’t take off like grunge or Britpop, though.

Then, after zero success, but for the indie charts, Pop Will Eat Itself, headed up by (now award-winning composer) Clint Mansell, found samplers and went hog-wild on them. This is but one example, and I still like it. I’ve been getting so nostalgic this year. I think it is because the world is a mess and this music is like ambrosia for the soul. Whatever. I dig it. So many cultural references here.

      1. I’ll have to give those a gander. I’ve been largely unimpressed by post-2000 music, so I’m always interested in the possibility of discovering something I like that breaks that general rule.
