For over a decade, Greta Kline with her band Frankie Cosmos has been making her own brand of sweetly introspective indie pop, full of wry observations and a melancholic undertow. There’s more of this on her sixth studio album, but with some nice experimentation thrown in. Call it ‘Sad Girl Summer’ if you like.
I wonder what the defiant looking child version of herself on the front cover would make of these songs. Would she imagine that her soft, lilting vocals could carry the weight of disappointment and yet still have a sense of optimism?
‘Vanity’ is perfect bedroom pop, and ‘You Become ‘ is a candid, hazy ballad with warm swathes of synth. Elsewhere, country influences are all over ‘Joyride’, and ‘Porcelain’ mines the psychedelic elements of the 60s. ‘Tomorrow ‘ has the tang and zest of the Lemonheads.
Young Greta would doubtless be proud of this multilayered, assured album which showcases really mature lyricism. It’s perfect summer sunset listening, no need for extra seasoning.
Released via Sub Pop on June 27th.
Vanity goes down like a glass of lemonade.
