Album Review: Molchat Doma- Balaya Palosa

The Belarus trio, who recently relocated to Los Angeles, have crafted a subtle and complex piece of darkwave here. It’s music which is perfect for travelling home on trains as dusk gathers in crowded cities. Take your pick which city. This album is concrete and neon, dark and ominous. It’s rather beautiful too.

The plethora of influences make this a sonically diverse and satisfying album. Anchoring it all is Egor Shkutko’s gorgeous voice and the shimmering synth of Pavel Kozlov. There are traces of Black Celebration era Depeche Mode on ‘Ya Tak Ustal’ , a cinematic and atmospheric piano waltz (‘Beznadezhnyy Waltz’) and both ‘Son’and ‘Chernye Tsvety’ share a neo- noir twang suggesting spaghetti western soundtracks. Pull the blinds down, pour a large glass of wine and indulge in the dark side.
