Amid a political storm (Palestinian supporters were vocal in their protests outside the venue) and controversy (Netherlands artist Joost Klein was disqualified after allegedly “inappropriate behaviour” towards a camerawoman) Nemo, Switzerland ‘s entry, won with a great song and heartfelt, energetic performance. The Code, which tackles Nemo’s non -binary identity, won public and cross-continental votes alike.
The whole show was winningly presided over by Graham Norton, whose adlibs were as wonderfully acerbic as ever (of the Swedish entry, comprising Norwegian twins, Marcus and Martinus, he said, “I met them at breakfast the other morning. One of them was friendly…” ) and the set pieces looked slick, vibrant and contemporary, except for an ill-judged appearance by the ‘ABBA-tars’, who had something of the Uncanny Valley about them. Uggghhh. Creepy.
Switzerland ‘s victory is a great result, in my humble opinion. Not only can Nemo sing with an impressive, operatic vocal range, they can also rap, and showed mad skills, balanced precariously atop a strange prop that looked like a satellite dish, sliding up and down as easily as they scaled high and low notes. It was a brilliant coup de theatre and they seem like a decent soul, so congratulations Nemo on “douze points” across the board. Well deserved. Piers Morgan will be absolutely furious, so all is well in the world.
the Swiss hardly ever make
front page news, at least not in the USA, so … go Switzerland
