Lost In Music: The Cramps- Smell Of Female (Live At The Peppermint Lounge)

Feral, camp and outrageous, The Cramps‘ live album from 1983, was apparently tweaked a little (seemingly the audience screams were from a ‘bigger’ band) but still sounds fresh and vital. It’s definitely more playful than menacing. The line-up is Interior, Rorschach, Kid Congo Powers and Nick Knox. Classic line-up as far as I’m concerned.

‘You Got Good Taste’ is a teasing, innuendo filled strut , more bump than grind, and the cover of ‘Faster Pussycat,Kill! Kill!’ stays pretty close to the original, with Lux Interior crooning in an almost earnest manner.

But it’s the ridiculous ‘Call Of The Wighat’ that shows the absurdist humour within :

” Well my Mama had twin babies on one sweet summer day/She beat one in the head, and I’m the one who got away “…

The sleazy, horror Burlesque elements still pop up with ‘I Ain’t Nuthin’ But A Gorehound’ but as far as The Cramps go, they sound smoother here than on ‘Psychedelic Jungle’ or ‘Songs The Lord Taught Us’. It still rocks my stripey socks though. Can we just take a minute to appreciate Ivy and her badass guitar playing?
