RuPaul’s Drag Race Series 8 Begins!

Mama Ru

The winning franchise continues as- staggeringly- we find ourselves at series 8 of the UK version. And oh my, for the love of Saint Dolly, is it kicking off already. These queens do not hold back.

In an extremely ill-judged moment backstage, young queen Paris Baby threw what I think she thought was shady banter to older queen KY Kelly (excellent drag name) about her ample size, and she was less than impressed, to put it mildly… Ouchy. It went down like Chinatown.

What irked me was that Paris Baby didn’t seem too fussed about the dressing down and didn’t even apologise. Body- shaming is not what drag’s about (ask John Waters about Divine, and how drag was her armour against the bullies) and Paris Baby needs to take some accountability for what she said.

Below: Coral Hole Mandi, snarling and, underneath,The Delta Quadrant, werking.

Dama aside, I’m liking The Delta Quadrant, the CEO of Camp, who’s like a hybrid of Su Pollard and Mary Portas, and Coral Hole Mandi, a wild Irish marine biologist who turned full-time to performance.

This lot are a handful all right, and I am looking forward to a truly chaotic series. More as it happens…

Available to watch on Thursdays, 10 pm on BBC 3 and on BBC iPlayer.
