A Perfect Scene

One of my favourite films scenes is in Wim Wenders’ immaculate Wings Of Desire. Crime and the City Solution are playing a gig in Berlin, and the beautiful Marion, played by Solveig Dommartin, dances, freed from her circus job, arms flailing. An angel, Damiel, played by Bruno Ganz , has fallen in love with her.

He’s gifted -and cursed- with hearing the innermost thoughts of everyone. Her swaying dance, in monochrome, the great Rowland S Howard strutting and prowling around the stage as his filthy guitar ricochets around the room, and the feeling of just being in a moment, immortalised forever- it doesn’t get much better than this. The angel’s love makes him mortal, and the film then plunges into colour. It’s so beautiful.
