Originally from Baltimore and now based in Germany, Horse Lords cut an experimental swathe through the indie music scene. This new album sees them expand their sound even further.
The title track is as though Battles got together with Steve Reich, and created alien funk. Blips and beeps build into looping percussion and vocals. It’s at once mad and beautiful. Elsewhere, tracks like ‘Brain Of The Firm’ and ‘First Galactic Utopia’ mine the kind of grooves that set the Mudd Club alive back in the day, but with contemporary twists. Andrew Bernstein’s wild sax brings skronky textures to the pot.
It’s this kind of elasticity and eclecticism that makes Horse Lords more willing to push limits, far more interesting than your average indie edgelords.
