Overlooked Classic: Von Sudenfed- Tromatic Reflexxions

Or rather, MES and Mouse On Mars’ gnarly side project. Mark E Smith never liked to be second -guessed, and he had of course worked with Coldcut, so his collab with electronic pioneers Jan St Werner and Andi Toma was another delightful surprise. Smith added his addled poetry to their thick, distorted beats and it was a brilliant album.

One of my favourite associations with this album is seeing my friend Suzi Cunningham, the beautiful punk sprite, shaking her booty to ‘Flooded’ from this album in a Butoh performance night at the now closed CCA in Glasgow (where I used to work). She tore it up. It was brilliant and unforgettable.

It’s got some typically perverse Smith rants and musings, and even their name is a pun on cough syrup. Essentially, everything you could ask for is right here. It was released in 2007 but sounds as fresh as ever. RIP Mark.
