There’s nothing like seeing artists playing live. The energy, that electricity that can’t be replicated elsewhere is one of my favourite experiences in life. New artists are passionate and give their all. At the moment, though, I’m recovering from hip replacement surgery, so unable to see music like I used to. This town has no venues. I shit you not…not one.
Unfortunately, too, many venues face permanent closure. The arts are not in great shape. Many face debts and struggle with recouping financially. Recently, the very place where I worked for over a decade, CCA (Contemporary Centre of Arts) in Glasgow was another beloved venue to shut down indefinitely. Its closure will leave a massive hole in Glasgow as did The Arches, when it permanently, and controversially , shut forever in 2015. I still miss its radical live art buzzy atmosphere and bouncing floors.

How can we make a difference? It’s ridiculously simple really. Support smaller bands and low-key venues. Try seeing stuff you wouldn’t otherwise go out of your way to see. Who cares if there are only twenty people in the aneudience there? You’re supporting the arts, the very lifeblood of touring acts. Buy a poster and t shirt too, if you can.
