EP Review: Problem Patterns – Boring Songs For Boring People

One of Belfast ‘s finest are back with this ironically titled gem. Beverly Boal, Bethany Crooks, Ciara King and Alanah Smith make frenetic, furious queer punk with a wicked sense of humour.

This time round, they’re joined by Pissed Jeans’ Matt Korvette for the hypercharged ‘Sad Old Woman’. Meanwhile, their addition to the BBC playlist is the backbone of ‘I’m Fine And I’m Doing Great’ which just oozes sarcasm. Or there’s the slice and dice of ‘Bone Idle’ culminating in a glorious screaming fit.

In short, it’s a timely reminder of bands who refuse to stroke the mainstream: none of the coy nonsense of Wet Leg here. Problem Patterns are indecently fun, despite the rage. The spirit of Ari Up is strong in this one. They’re the real deal.

  1. of course I’ve never heard of any of them, but I listened to one of the tracks on bandcamp and it just makes me so happy knowing there are other artists that aren’t part of and don’t seem to care about mainstream, just make stuff that’s raw and honest and will connect with someone like they did with me
