Ooooh, Disintegration. As any Cure fan will tell you, there are few finer words in the English language. I was reminded of this masterpiece of a song from said album when binge -watching the latest BBC drama Mix Tape. The poignant series, focussing on a rekindled love afair between two indie kids thirty years later, made potent use of the song Robert Smith wrote for his lovely wife Mary Poole as a wedding gift. It speaks to relationship longevity, which is why it bookended the drama so perfectly. Alison and Daniel are besotted with each other, many years later. It reminds us of those first tentative sparks.

The reason this song so endures is that Smith, who completely understands the craft of songwriting, captures the heightened emotions of first love: trepidation, euphoria and desire all coalescing, alongside in contrast, the slightly weary resignation of time passing and the loss of pure innocence. It’s at once melancholic and euphoric: perfect pop.
Oooh is right. Made the end of 1989 especially memorable for me as I was going through my first big breakup, and what a record for that. Did not know that about this song though, that it’s a legitimate ode to his wife! How lovely; will hear it differently now next time. I saw them tour live the following year but sadly did not appreciate that record enough yet to fully enjoy the show. I wanted the classics. They played the album sequentially in sets of three at a time, so neat. Be well Lorelei!

Thanks Bill. It was my first break up too, The Cure seem to soundtrack that, but at least Robert and Mary are still together !❤ Awww. The Cure still resonate for us Gen Xers. Best wishes to you😊

Best wishes to you! I have a postcard cutout of The Cure I just hung on a mirror in my den from that mid 80s era, In Between Days video I think, where they are all wearing reflective day-glo facial paints. Super trippy and cool, reminds me of another time. Be well!

Yeah, I like Tim Pope’s videos with the band. Maybe a post in there. Thanks for the well wishes, I’m awaiting my second hip replacement. Fingers crossed.
