Album Review: Model/Actriz- Pirouette

This simply has to be one of the best albums of the year. A mash up of so many exciting elements: the dancefloor burn of mid-noughties American artists like LCD Soundsystem; wild experimentation of no wave and sheer filth of glam at its sleaziest. It’s night time music for seduction or moving under neon lights. Cole Haden’s speak singing falls between purr and snarl, he’s a slinky, charismatic vocalist at the heart of it all.

‘Diva’ has a nagging undercurrent of unease, in spite of its frenzied percussion. Haden has described the theme of melancholy within the song as that of the feeling that hits after a one night stand.’Doves’ is similarly acidic.

Meanwhile, ‘Cinderella ‘ struts and preens, despite being a tale of queer disappointment and denial. It’s the tease and tension within the disparate influences that make it work- genre blended music for such cruel and uncertain times.

Out on May 2nd via Dirty Hit.
