Album Review: Anna B Savage -You & I Are Earth

A new Anna B Savage album is always something worth investing time in. Her voice is so disarmingly beautiful that everything else melts away. This is not background music. It’s intimate and raw, and you lean in to listen, as though she’s sharing precious secrets with you alone.

This time, Savage is, as with Bjork ‘s Fossora , burrowing deep into nature for inspiration. It’s there on her front cover, where she’s blinking in the daylight like a little woodland nymph. And it’s there in her lyrics, which take in love as a safe haven ( ‘Lighthouse’, with its theme of love as a safe haven) and life changes (the title track).

Having recently attained a Master’s degree in music has buoyed this singular artist and bled into the album. It’s rooted in hope of a better future, and with its silky strings shapeshifting rhythms and field recordings feels full of joy and optimism. We could all use more of this in our divided times.
