Maybe I’m cheating a little on this one, as it was the album which broke her (third time’s a charm) but I think Simz’ last two albums, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert and No Thank You have somewhat eclipsed even this 2019 gem.
Grey Area broke the mould for UK hip hop in at least a gazillion ways. Simbiatu Ajikawo has a unique, wry flow, and her eclecticism is boundless, not to mention cartoon, jazz flute, pirate radio, and martial arts samples are both a nod to hip hop ‘s lineage (Wu- Tang Clan, Ninja Tune) and its future.
Simz is cheeky, life-affirming and defiant, all at once. She also has great taste, collaborating with Cleo Sol on Selfish, Little Dragon on Pressure, and Michael Kiwanuka on Flowers. She’s just one of the best – you can keep Billie, Taylor and Lana, I’m Team Simz all the way. This is the one that sealed it for me.All hail the introverts.
