Overlooked Classics: AC Marias -One Of Our Girls

Formed by Wire’s Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis, with film maker and singer Angela Conway, AC Marias made an album which pretty much seemed to disappear into the ether as soon as it had arrived. That’s probably as apt a metaphor as you could wish for, given the strange nature of this beautiful album. Even the title, One Of Our Girls Has Gone Missing has an enigmatic quality.

It’s feathery, moody but sweet, with the most minimal of guitar lines, percussion and Conway ‘s murmured vocals. It’s not music that fills the room; rather, it’s music that requires more of the listener. It’s painted in fine strokes rather than bold. I think the closest comparison could be Broadcast, as Conway was the antithesis of a belter, but even that falls short. It is avant pop before that was a genre, and it’s still a wonderful thing, way ahead of its time.
