Nick Cave has often said it’s not his favourite self-penned song, and I agree: it’s kinda hokum, with its Hammer Horror organ and slightly cheesy delivery.
So, Iggy Pop and Jarvis Cocker (who better?!?!??) brought out this collaboration and I love it, it sounds dirtier and tougher than the original slightly coy version from Nick and the Bad Seeds.
Cover versions, to my mind, are more interesting when completely rehauled. This is mighty indeed. You can’t keep the Detroit legend, and the Sheffield fella, down. I’ve still never seen ‘Peaky Blinders’, by the way.
I like this version, too. dirtier, iggier. Nick Cave’s has that soulful Sam Cooke vibe but not enough pulse.

Iggier is a brilliant expression! Yeah, I like when Nick has more attack in his music. I’m a goth at heart…can’t help it! First saw Nick on the Henry’s Dream tour in 1992. Wonderful 😉
