The new album from Mexican duo Mint Field , is evocative of 4AD big hitters like Cocteau Twins and His Name Is Alive, but with their own unique spin on the template. It’s gauzy, dreamlike and a little disconcerting, as the best Dream pop always is.
Estrella del Sol’s vocals caress, while remaining unsettling. She and Sebastian Neyra are joined by Ulrika Spacek’s Callum Brown on drums, bringing a more expansive sound.
The theme of this album is mindfulness- indeed, the title translates into English as ” learn to be “, with the band suggesting “nothing should be taken for granted” . They’re inspired by nature, which goes at its own organic pace.
Even tracks that lean into more “conventional” pop, such as ‘Horizonte’ and ‘Orquidae’, are smothered in reverb and distortion, joining the ranks of My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth circa EVOL, and Pale Saints. It’s a winning formula, this soft/ harsh soundscape- Mint Field prove new shapes can be woven into ethereal music.
