Working as a freelance writer, I’m always working from home these days, which means a constant soundtrack from my favourite radio station, 6Music.
My favourite DJ is Mary Anne Hobbs, the mellow techno earth mother. She’s wonderfully eclectic, playing everything from Shygirl to Queens Of The Stone Age.
I’m also really chuffed that Deb Grant and Tom Ravenscroft (pictured) have a new slot together – they’re knowledgeable, and into beats, Black music and experimental, leftfield stuff. Perfect.
Recent newbie to the station Jamz Supernova isn’t terribly bright, despite playing some great stuff. She doesn’t always seem clued up. Yesterday, in an interview with composer Max Richter, she struggled four times to pronounce the word, “iconography” . In an interview with Bjork recently, the Icelandic legend referenced Anais Nin, and Supernova just seemed baffled. Hobbs would have known all about the iconic writer, and responded with insight.
As much as I like Marc Riley, he’s rather stuck in postpunk and.white indie guitar boys, and in 2023, that’s not good enough. Music is more diverse than ever now, genres blend, and 6Music should reflect that, so despite the naysayers, I’m glad Deb and Tom have the Riley slot while he and Gideon Coe take the later one together. As Iggy Pop (another 6Music DJ in his own right with Iggy Confidential) once said, “All music is best heard in isolation” . Mix it up.
