Richard Dawson, the cherubic neo-folk Geordie singer, could bring eloquence to a song about peeling paint on a kitchen wall. His witty, deeply humane slice of life material is why he’s one of my favourite songwriters around.
His album ‘2020’ (recorded in 2019 before you- know -what ruined everything) took on pub flooding, racist neighbours, faded relationships and, delightfully, this gorgeous song about a boy’s relationship with his dad through the prism of a fraught football match. It’s like a symphony within a song and the video is adorable, created and animated by Lesley -Ann Rose. It’s a wee masterpiece.
I thought a small town footie anthem would be a timely antidote to the World Cup mania elsewhere. It’s very lovely.
