There had been much speculation around the titular character of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Who was she based on? Jayne County was mooted, and indeed she herself , having seen the premise, thought the story was hers. Indeed, other lesser known artists also saw themselves in Hedwig. But according to the film’s creator and star John Cameron Mitchell it was actually based on a local German army wife/ babysitter Helga, albeit loosely.
The “angry inch” of the title refers to a botched sex change operation, as Hedwig is of course a transgender singer. But she’s hardly climbing the ladder to global success. Indeed, she’s playing seafood joints to staggering indifference and in some cases, blatant bigotry. What’s a gal to do?

This film is the antithesis of rote musical theatre formula. It’s more knowing, more winking, and the songs and performances are badass. There’s none of the easy resolution of The Rocky Horror Picture Show: it’s more a question of identity, self -actualisation, outsider status and naturally, with some none too subtle references to Plato- the song ‘Origin Of Love’ is based on his Symposium. Let’s see that in your average jukebox musical. As if!
