Liverpool garage horror fiends Zombina and The Skeletones have been doing their own creepy, kooky-ooky -ooky thing since 1998, and this new album, just out in time for The Witching Season, is a nice mix of ghoulish Hammer Horror and itchy riffage.
It should sate fans of Death Valley Girls, The Cramps and Pebbles compilations alike, filled with swagger and hooks (in both sense of the word). The bad-ass ‘Don’t Kick My Coffin’ is like ’96 Tears’ covered by ‘The Munsters’, whereas ‘I’m Horrified!’ has the lo-fi fuzz of Joe Meek at his most eccentric, sonically speaking. New drummer ”All Hallow’s” Eve Barnes is a petite battering ram, and Doc Horror’s guitar has real bite.
But there is a sweeter side too, as the album closer ‘No Wonder I’m Always Anxious’ sees Zombina bringing a little sugar to her vocal, and some introspection. It’s like a sigh of relief, after a nightmare. No tricks, then, but many treats here, for those of us who like it a little more Goth.
