The man,the myth, the moustache.. Now, the movie. In many ways, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic epitomises not only art, but in some ways strikes at the core of what it is to be human. So it is with this inspired mock biopic, co-written and directed by Yankovic himself with Eric Appel, starring Daniel Radcliffe as the parody singer who rocks an accordion like…err…few others before him.
Only the eighties could’ve spawned a cult icon like Yankovic, a man who rewrote pop spngs with an irresistibly zealous stupidity. Who could forget such timeless gems as ‘Eat It’ ‘Another One Rides the Bus’ or ‘Amish Paradise’?

Want to see the origin story of ‘My Bologna’? His toxic relationship with Madonna (a hell for leather Evan Rachel Wood) ? His seemingly limitless collection of Hawaiian shirts? Course you do. Radcliffe portrays the young dreamer with nebbishy charm, and biopic tropes like truculent fathers, drug trips and the poisoned chalice of fame are tickled into submission, with a syrupy string laden soundtrack- as well as the hits, of course.
It’s all played with a completely straight bat, and is a nod to the power of outsider art. Yankovic cameos, gloriosly, as a record company asshole. Radcliffe looks more like a Muppet playing Dean Friedman though. Which is all to the good. What a film. It makes me giggle like an absolute twat.
I had to look this guy up. “irresistible stupidity,” yes, that says it all. if I could watch, I would.
