LA musician and performance/visual artist Geneva Jacuzzi has a lot of heat around her…pun intended. It’s clear that she’s ambitious and talented, her synth pop sound coming over like she chewed up and spat out the entire eighties decade.
So there’s a Warholian flavour to brand new album Triple Fire . Opener ‘Laps Of Luxury’ manages to doff a jaunty baseball cap to both New Order and Pet Sho Boys, while her imperious vocal, in contrast, channels the decade’s darker side: it’s more akin to Siouxsie and early Cocteau Twins.
It mostly works, particularly when arching an eyebrow at modern hipster poseurs. ‘Scene Ballerina’ is full- throttle euphoric pop with the kind of irony we see in art gallery settings.
And the closer,’Yo-Yo Boy’ feels like a David Lynch singer let loose in Studio 54. But while it’s all very nice, danceable retro synth pop with the exception of the more catty ‘Art Is Dangerous ‘, I’d like to hear her let rip more. Good to move your bones to, but let’s see her freak flag hoisted aloft for the world to enjoy.
Released via Dais Records on August 23rd.
