Overlooked Classics: Cat’s Eyes

Here’s something I think about a lot: female and male call and response always sounds sexy in music. Whether it’s Nancy and Lee, Marvin and Tammi, or MBV’s Kevin and Bilinda, there’s something that suggests simmering intimacy and eroticism. So it is with the debut eponymous album from 2011, Cat’s Eyes.

Rachel Zeffira and Faris Badwan are from slightly different musical backgrounds: she’s a classically trained soprano and multi-instrumentalist; he’s the vocalist and musician for Goth band The Horrors. But their shared love of esoteric influences is why it all works

There’s a duality of heaven and hell in the songwriting, with a patchwork of Phil Spector, goth, postpunk and dreamy film scores in this album. It’s absolutely immaculate. Little wonder they later went on to score The Duke Of Burgundy ,Peter Strickland’s gorgeous film.
