Demis in a Kaftan

We really need to make the kaftan *the* fashion item for 2024 spring/summer collection. Late Greek crooner Demis Roussos made the kaftan popular in the seventies, because he was a big fella, bless him. I like it: bold patterns, voluminous, teamed with big patent boots. It’s maximalist chic. Demis in a kaftan, I know, I know, it’s serious, as Moz didn’t sing.

Pass the Beaujolais (chilled of course) pineapple and cheese on sticks and start a row about art as pornography, a la Abigail ‘s Party. It’s what he would have wanted. This look is forever and ever.

  1. The jellabiya! My step-dad was a big man too and turned me on to this kaftan lifestyle too. We used to order them from a popular mail order company in the States called J. Peterman. We’d even hand them out to overnight guests when throwing parties and boy, it does change the mood when everyone is wearing something like that and drinking. Sigh, those were the days. You’re onto something here Lorelei!

    1. It’s quite something. Abigail’s Party is a hilarious play from the seventies, which references the great Demis. I’m not sure if America ever got it sent over. Say Beverly and Laurence to most people in the UK and they mention the famous warbler and his kaftan. It’s inextricably linked.

      1. My stepdad was English. Somehow the cooking of curries and the big tent-like kaftan were like hand in glove. The sun shines out of our behinds! Ha ha!
