I recently reviewed a gorgeous show at Tramway for Fjord Review, a lovely dance website I’ve been writing for since 2015. The show carried a trigger warning, which is fine by me. People have different sensitivities, and if you have kids, some material could be inappropriate or even offensive.
Now, I’m not a pearl clutcher by any stretch of the imagination. I’ve seem my share of transgressive art, performance art and controversial subject matter on the stage. Some of it has been sexy, beautiful or just pointless edgelord bullshit. But here’s the thing: trigger warnings, such as this one below, are there for a reason.

But what really grinds my gears is the amount of kids that were in attendance. If a show has a 12+ warning, or a trigger warning, don’t bring little ones. Similarly, please stop taking children to stuff that will confuse or be hard to deal with.
We know what this is. You couldn’t get a babysitter for the night, so fuck it. Little Tarquin will find out how shit the world is eventually. Doesn’t matter that he’s eight.Grrrrrr! Fuck off with this bullshit.
Some things are just kinda inappropriate for wee ones, hipster parents. Some things are okay. Viz comic predicted this with their Modern Parents comic strip, the hideous Malcolm and Cressida. Let’s not make it the norm.
