Bad Cover Versions: The Damned- See Emily Play

Oh… Dear. The Damned have always been a huge source of joy and affection for me, as they were the first live band I ever saw, back in their ‘Phantasmagoria’ era. They were great, even though they were already past their best by then. And I love the original version of this by Pink Floyd, because I adore the saucer eyed whimsy of Syd Barrett. But oh boy, this cover sucks a big one.

Captain Sensible, the endlessly charming occasional singer, takes on lead vocals here, but it’s far too polite and overproduced by half. We’ve always known that The Damned owe a debt of influence to the great psychedelic artists of the sixties. Many great goth and punk bands do. Unfortunately, this is akin to just a karaoke stint at The Knee Trembler and Kebab, Hoxton. Not good. Not good at all. A covers album is forthcoming. Think I will pass, thanks.
