Goodbye Glesga… For a bit.

The Wee Man,aka Neil Bratchpiece

Glasgow is a glorious city, full of contrasts: it’s the “Dear Green Place”; yet struggles with violence and gangland beefs. It’s modern, yet can be reactionary as hell. People can be wonderful, and I lived there over two decades. The buzz, bands, dance and theatre on my doorstep and the multiculturalism were glorious.

However, the bam stereotype persists, and with good reason. Decked out in sportswear, despite their only sports being running fae the polis*, or to the off-licence, their wrath is mighty indeed.

*from the police

They can be found all over Scotland, but mostly live in Glasgow. Very recently, I fell foul of some of these gangs, and the reality is no laughing matter.

Internet viral hit The Wee Man, portrayed by comic actor Neil Bratchpiece, is one of the best depictions I’ve ever seen. He encapsulates the feckless, slack-jawed and nasty idiocy beautifully.

Anyhoo, I’ve moved away from the bams and also the beautiful. As a working-class woman , this could’ve been me. Bratchpiece, I salute you.
