More Arts Cuts

Another year, another series of job cuts to the creative arts sector in Scotland. Despite promising millions of pounds in arts investment in this country, yet again we’ve witnessed more U turns from the Scottish government and Creative Scotland, meaning that struggling artists, companies, writers, directors, dancers and so on won’t be able to get projects off the ground.

It’s very telling that countries such as France, Italy, Germany, Iceland and even the USA have thriving art industries. Independent artists can make films, choreography and drama without having to go cap in hand to funding bodies or sponsors to do so. The best, most original art comes from leftfield, from radical thinkers and makers, not some cookie cutter, mass marketed system. Let’s invest and let the marginalised voices speak out. The arts will die otherwise.
