And …Cut!

I kinda miss The Marx Brothers. Their beautifully crafted slapstick was matched only by the witty one-liners. Vaudeville performers who emerged during the Depression era in America, they epitomised freewheeling anarchy and sight gags like few others. Laurel and Hardy are great, but the Marx Bros kicked it up a notch.

They each brought something to the comedy buffet: Chico was a hustler; Harpo an innocent clown, Groucho was lascivious and sardonic… and then there was…err.. Zeppo.

Sadly, their films are rarely screened anywhere in the UK anymore (possibly the womanising and cultural cliches aren’t palatable these days) but for those of us who grew up in the eighties, their capers and ridiculous songs only added more joy to the festive season. Unlike a Brussels sprout, these were repeats worth having. *Honk!*
