Something glorious is going on in music right now. Soul and funk is back in a big way. It’s never really gone away, but the likes of Cleo Sol (main picture) Say She She, Gabriels and Black Pumas have soundtracked this year with soul and funk -infused tunes that are evocative of the greats: think Marvin Gaye, Chic, Minnie Ripperton and Sly and the Family Stone jamming psychedelic soul. It’s all so beautiful.
Say She She are being defined as “discodelic”, Cleo Sol is part of mysterious collective Sault and makes wonderful solo work, and Black Pumas and Gabriels are mining old and contemporary influences, fusing it all together into alchemy. It’s a nice antidote to the difficult times we’re living in, music to make you feel better. Much needed, very much so.
I dig those thick, rick harmonies and it’s nice to hear melodies and grooves without the cotton-candy production found in most pop music.

Yeah, agree. It’s definitely got a woozy psych undercurrent, retro and contemporary simultaneously 😺
