Album Review: Party Dozen -Crime In Australia

Holy shit in a can, this is one bruiser of an album. The Sydney -based duo, comprising Kirsty Tickle on wild sax and Jonathan Boulet on relentless, fiery drums, have created a noise that must be played loud, while I get in the van with the loot, and you tie up the bank manager. They’ve previously collaborated with Nick Cave on the brittle ‘Macca The Mutt’, but this new album is every bit aa uncompromising as the new Cave material seems to be staggeringly mediocre. More of that later…

Despite the chiming, more hypnotic and contemplative incantation of ‘The Big Man Upstairs ‘, it’s mostly a scuzzy, thrilling melee. ‘Wake In Might’ is a sexy, psychedelic grind akin to ‘Funhouse’ era Stooges, while ‘Bad News Department ‘ comes on like the long lost theme to a sixties sci-fi flick.

‘Coup De Gronk’ brings the skronk, and ‘Money & The Drugs’ is clearly influenced as much by early Suicide as much as Sonic Youth. Meanwhile, the truly evil ‘Piss On Earth’ crackles like static, as Tickle’s sax goes low and deep.

It all goes off like a binfire in a tough district, full of danger, lust and intrigue : a seriously badass experience for those of us bored with the faux alternative music out there designed for the Spotify generation. They’re trouble, these two, a punky, dissolute Bonnie and Clyde. I’m in.

Released on September 6th via Temporary Residence Ltd.
